Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: December Reflections and Gentle January

Inspired by: a monthly creative blog series by Riikka Kovasin and Marsha Valk

Hi there! It still isn’t the 10th… But I do have the January instalment of the ‘new’ Inspired by for you!

Inspired by is a blog series by my friend Riikka and I. As I explained in this post, we’re no longer deciding on a theme beforehand, and we’re also not creating something with that theme or thing in mind anymore.

From now on, each month, we’ll share our personal sources of inspiration with you (and each other) from the past month.

I decided to make a list because I’m finally getting my mojo back and I found I got excited and inspired by a lot of things. Which feels good, so good!

And it’s a long list… So let’s dive right in!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: December Reflections and Gentle January

Susannah Conway inspires me to keep looking. Even if the weather seems too gloomy and too dark to take photographs (I like).

Susannah hosted the photo-a-day project ‘December Reflections‘ in December and to create a soft(er) landing, she’s currently hosting ‘Gentle January‘.

I can’t seem to manage to take daily photos because December was so busy (and January appears to continue in the same fashion), but projects like this always help me see things in a different light.

Just this week I spotted a particular door on my way home from the gym and some things about the graveyard in my neighbourhood that I haven’t noticed before. At the very least it makes running errands a lot more enjoyable!

[vimeo 251138296]

Xanthe Berkeley continues to inspire me to keep trying to catch stuff on video.

I’m not very successful at staying on the bandwagon yet, and I’m also not taking the time to edit the footage very often. But I’m determined to really make this happen at some point in 2018. Sooner rather than later!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Frottage

Max Ernst. A visit to the Max Ernst Museum in Brühl, Germany at the beginning of December turned out to be a massive influence on my work the rest of the month. And I don’t think its impact is over just yet.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Frottage

Max Ernst developed frottage (a rubbing technique) in 1925, and there was a wall full of his frottage artworks on display.

I tried my hand at crayon rubbings for my January n*Studio Creative Squad post.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Frottage

I also looked into how I could best present the rubbings, which prompted me to look into frames and mats.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Pastels

Mystele Kirkeeng inspired me to put some pastels on my Christmas wishlist. She also continues to prompt me to create crazy backgrounds and to draw girls.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Lykke Moodstore

Lykke Moodstore inspired me to buy an Araucaria which then led me to change all the plant pots in the house!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Carve December

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and lots of people that followed along with her Carve December challenge inspired me to carve two stamps.

Those stamps (and a couple of others that I’d carved before) found their way into my Gelli Arts video.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Gelli Arts

Lou Ann Gleason of Gelli Arts inspired me to try Gelli printing on transparencies for my January Gelli Arts video.

It was so much fun!!! And in the process, I discovered a technique that I will show in my February video for Gelli Arts.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Serious Request

Babette Schrijft and all of her Dutch handletter pals who raised money for the Red Cross with their Serious Lettering!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Central Park Apeldoorn

They not only inspired me to give generously during the annual 3FM Serious Request fundraising event but also to visit the Glass House in Apeldoorn and explore the city.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Makelight

Emily Quinton (Makelight) inspired me to create a flat lay with some of the German cookies and yummy chocolates we bought for the holidays.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Recipes

Allerhande inspired me to pick up meal planning and cooking again. This is a magazine that is published by Albert Heijn, a Dutch supermarket chain.

Having braces installed unfortunately has meant that I had to radically change my eating habits in 2017. And frankly that I lost my appetite… It’s not back yet, but at least I’m making an effort again!

And last but c e r t a i n l y not least: Creative JumpStart 2018

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Creative JumpStart 2018

I thought about how I could follow along with CJS2018 and make it work for me.

I figured I was more likely to keep up with it if I could work in a small journal. I settled on a passport-sized Traveler’s Notebook insert.

Which is a lot smaller than I usually work on/in. But it seems to do the trick because I’m now creating on a (semi-)daily basis!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Creative JumpStart 2018

I love Creative JumpStart so much!

You never know what the featured teacher is going to show that day and what materials you are going to use. I’m going from acrylic paint to Pan Pastels, to crayons, to watercolours and back to acrylic paints again.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by - January 2018: Creative JumpStart 2018

I’m taking the time each day to learn, to try and to figure out what I like and what I don’t like about the lessons, the materials and the techniques.

If you want to follow along with what I do: I tend to share my results in my Instagram Stories.

And… If you want in on Creative JumpStart 2018: it’s not too late to join us! There is plenty of time to catch up!

Go to Nathalie Kalbach’s website (affiliate link) to find out more and to register!

That’s a wrap!

That’s it for this month’s Inspired by!

Don’t forget to stop by Riikka’s blog Paperiliitin and read what has been on her mind in the past month.

Inspired by: a monthly creative blog series by Riikka Kovasin and Marsha Valk Inspired by is a blog series by my friend Riikka and I.

On the 10th of each month, we share what inspired us that month with you and each other.

It can be anything from a person, a film, a book, a painting, to an item, something found in nature or in the city, a colour scheme or some materials we bought or discovered.

We will also share how the source of inspiration affects our work. Consider it as a window into our creative minds!

n*Studio: Artful Adventures

My friend Nathalie Kalbach has written a book! It’s called Artful Adventures in Mixed Media (aff. link) and it’s full of mixed media art and techniques.

The official release day is June 8th and Nat is hosting an Artful Adventures Stroll Challenge in the 30 days leading up to the release.

We’re now on day 10 of the (photo) challenge and it’s not too late to join in!

You can view the prompts at the end of my post and start right away or you can go to Nat’s website and register to get access to the optional classroom.

I’m sharing the photos I take for the challenge on Instagram, so be sure to follow me there, especially if you want to read the thoughts and explanations that go with them!

I’ve also started a new art journal for my creative takes on the prompts. On Tuesday I’ll be sharing my take on the ‘Pattern’ prompt on Nat’s blog for my monthly n*Studio Creative Squad post!

I hope you’ll join us! Enjoy your weekend!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by: WIDN

Inspired by: a monthly creative blog series by Riikka Kovasin and Marsha Valk

Hi there! It’s the 10th! Which today for the first time in almost 5 years (!) unfortunately means that there is no Inspired by post…

The reason is that my friend Riikka and I have teamed up with someone special to create with something in particular. But the ‘something’ isn’t here just yet… So stay tuned for that post later this month!

In the meantime we’ve decided to share what’s going on/what we’re working on…

Marsha Valk | Inspired by: WIDN

WIDN
What I’m doing now is obvious… I’m writing to you!

It’s part of my admin day. On Mondays I’m usually tackling boring computer stuff, e-mail, invoices, receipts and such.

So it’s not the most creative workday of the week to share with you, but it is reality!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by: WIDN

I taught two super fun Gelli printing workshops yesterday at the Handlettering Academy organised by Creative Xperience.

I still had to unpack all of the workshop stuff this morning and clean the used Gelli plates, brayers and painty stencils.

Marsha Valk | Inspired by: WIDN

These brayers (now all clean!) were kindly lent out to me by the fab Esther of Artchicks Studio!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by: WIDN

I was hoping to have some time left to play… But I haven’t gotten around to that yet. So I’m going to leave you with some of the examples I had prepared for yesterday’s workshops instead:

You can read about Riikka’s current goings-on at Paperiliitin. And remember that we’ll be back later this month with a real Inspired by project!

Enjoy your day!

Craft space

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace1

I shared my (updated) craft space on the Scrap365 blog a couple of weeks ago and I thought you might like to see it too!

I started scrapping at this table more than ten years ago. The table was in my living room back then and it was just our dining table. All my scrapbooking supplies fitted into a plastic container that was moved into a cabinet when I was done scrapping.

The situation lasted about three years and by 2006 I was ready to move into a corner of our attic. There was no heating there, but there was room for a desk and even better: enough space to house all the supplies and tools I had collected. I was scrapbooking right next to my washer and dryer, which of course meant that I always managed to stay on top of the laundry!

We had a separate room that we called the study, which was where we kept our desktop PC. I started to spend more and more time in there, to edit and print photos, type journaling and to check out the online scrapbooking forums.

My scrapbooking stuff was on the other hand spilling over to the rest of the attic… I clearly needed more room and the thought of central heating was kind of appealing too. So about two years later we moved my scrapbooking corner into the study.

Fast-forward to the current situation:

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace3

I have somehow managed to get rid of all the home office stuff in here. We no longer own a desktop PC, which makes things a lot more flexible!

My old dining table got replaced and found a new home in my craft space. My husband elongated the legs because I like to stand while creating.

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace2

The table recently moved to the centre of the room. I’m slowly trying to minimize the amount of stuff that is stored on these shelves.

It’s where you can find my packaging materials, pencils, crayons, punches and bigger tools, photo gear, 6×6 paper pads, canvases, printed photos, die-cuts, embellishments, tags, chipboard, envelopes, coloured cardstock, memorabilia, printer paper, photo paper and sewing materials…

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace7

On the other side of the chimney is an Expedit:

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace10

This is where I keep magazines, works in progress and… even more memorabilia:

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace5

My memorabilia hoarding habit is a problem that honestly needs to be fixed!

I have made progress in sorting it all out and now I need to do something with it. Some of it is tied to the works in progress, some of it is tied to potential projects, other stuff I keep for nostalgic or emotional reasons.

I have promised myself that this is it. I have to finish a project or decide to chuck things out before I can accumulate any more. I also need to decide what to do about the potential projects. Use it or lose it… That’s the question!

I know you can hardly see it here, but left of the Expedit sits a vintage record case. I keep my entire collection of 12×12 white, kraft and black cardstock and patterned paper in that record case!

On the opposite side of the table is another Expedit, that functions as more of a mixed media station:

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace6

Most of my inks, adhesives, special paints, pan pastels, embossing powders, watercolour mediums, washi tape, pens and markers are in those drawers, but you can also find roller and alphabet stamps, enamel dots and wood veneer in there.

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace8

This Expedit houses collage material, acrylic paint, spray inks, stencils, UTEE, clay, mediums, clear stamps and… my waste paper bin:

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace4

And last but certainly not least, there is a wine box on the window sill that contains my essential tools:

141027_MarshaValk_S365_CraftSpace9

Here I can reach for my paint brushes, attacher, several pairs of scissors, hole pokers, craft knives, palette knives, foam brushes, several rulers, craft sheets, baby wipes, spray bottle with water and a bottle of rubbing alcohol.

I love that this is a moveable feast: I can take out what I need, or I can just move the whole box to the worktable if needed.

I spend a lot of time in this room. This is where I paint (and splatter), cut, paste and sew. It’s also the place where I do my photo editing, writing and other computer work. It’s my room, I don’t have to share it with anyone else and I can leave unfinished projects out on the table if I want to.

I assure you that it isn’t always this tidy. I tend to pull out all kinds of stuff while creating. But I do try to put everything back once a project is finished. Having a place for everything really does help a lot and I consider myself very lucky to have a space like this!

That’s it. That concludes the tour of my room. I hope you enjoyed it!

This week on my iPhone

I’ve had a quiet weekend: I’ve been reading and writing, changing and tweaking my blog (not ready yet) as well as doing a little bit of cooking and cleaning.

I’m reading this book on creative photography and I’m taking loads of notes. I can’t wait to try some of the ideas in the book, it’s full of great tips and tricks!

Only a couple of days of August left…

I’m behind on the prompts. Our summer break ended on Monday and although I check the prompts every morning, I seem to forget about them during the day!

The number is part of a telephone number that is on an old box we use for a coffee table.
