Beyond The Paper - Mixed Media Art Journaling Workshop with Birgit Koopsen, Nathalie Kalbach and Marsha Valk

I’m beyond happy to announce that Nathalie Kalbach, Birgit Koopsen and I are back with a brand new collaborative mixed media workshop – Beyond The Paper!

In this three-week online workshop that begins on April 4th, 2021, we’re going to explore exciting and original substrates to create on.

Cardboard, Dura-Lar, Fabric, and more will be the foundation of our creations, and we will discuss how to make the most out of these unique surfaces.

The three of us will present a variety of paper alternatives and techniques that work beautifully with them, including foam stamping, printmaking, collage, stitching, and image transfers, to name a few.

And that’s not all!

Triple Play Stamp Set by Nathalie Kalbach, Birgit Koopsen and Marsha Valk

We’ve designed a 7-piece foam stamp set, especially for the workshop!

The Triple Play set includes six triangles (two designed by each of us) and then a hexagon border that they fit into.

I had so much fun designing my stamps. And, I cannot begin to describe how it feels to see them used by someone else! It’s weird and wonderful at the same time!

Can you guess which two are mine?

You can buy the Triple Play stamp set exclusively here: n*Store if you’re interested!

Inspired by: a monthly creative blog series by Riikka Kovasin and Marsha Valk

Hi there! It’s the 10th! Which today for the first time in almost 5 years (!) unfortunately means that there is no Inspired by post…

The reason is that my friend Riikka and I have teamed up with someone special to create with something in particular. But the ‘something’ isn’t here just yet… So stay tuned for that post later this month!

In the meantime we’ve decided to share what’s going on/what we’re working on…

WIDN
What I’m doing now is obvious… I’m writing to you!

It’s part of my admin day. On Mondays I’m usually tackling boring computer stuff, e-mail, invoices, receipts and such.

So it’s not the most creative workday of the week to share with you, but it is reality!

Marsha Valk | Inspired by: WIDN

I taught two super fun Gelli printing workshops yesterday at the Handlettering Academy organised by Creative Xperience.

I still had to unpack all of the workshop stuff this morning and clean the used Gelli plates, brayers and painty stencils.

These brayers (now all clean!) were kindly lent out to me by the fab Esther of Artchicks Studio!

I was hoping to have some time left to play… But I haven’t gotten around to that yet. So I’m going to leave you with some of the examples I had prepared for yesterday’s workshops instead:

You can read about Riikka’s current goings-on at Paperiliitin. And remember that we’ll be back later this month with a real Inspired by project!

Enjoy your day!

Scrapbookzolder | Art Specially 2015 Letraset Marker Workshop

Marsha Valk | Scrapbookzolder: Letraset marker workshop at ArtSpecially 2015

Last weekend at Art Specially I taught a workshop on Saturday night for Scrapbookzolder. It was all about techniques you can do with Letraset ProMarkers and Neon Markers:

The workshops were held in the nearby hotel and were exclusive to the guests that had booked for the entire Art Specially Event.

I had planned this as a 1-hour workshop, but I don’t think anyone in my group managed to finish the accordion mini book in that time. Fortunately most of the ladies and (two) gents (!) were able to stay a bit longer and they tried out most of the techniques I had in store for them.

I would love to teach this workshop again some time. It’s so much fun to use markers in different ways. They are far more versatile than you might think!!!

Sooo… Shoot me an email if you are interested in this workshop and maybe we can figure out a time and a place!

On that note: If you would like to receive a lovely letter from me now and then or if you want to be the first to hear about upcoming workshops and events than you can now subscribe to my NEWSLETTER!

You can opt for the English or the Dutch version. Dus… voor de Nederlandstalige lezers: ik heb exclusief voor jullie een superspeciale NIEUWSBRIEF in het Nederlands!

From the weekend | Art Specially 2015

Marsha Valk | Scrapbookzolder at Art Specially

Art Specially 2015 in Nijkerk was a blast! Birgit Koopsen and I spent all weekend make ‘n taking at the Scrapbookzolder stand.

At Birgit’s table participants could make a Gelli Plate print with her brand spanking new Carabelle Studio stamps:

At my table it was all about spritzing with Letraset ProMarkers and NeonMarkers and the Tim Holtz Distress Marker Spritzer and (almost) no cutting in craft sheets:

Marsha Valk | Scrapbookzolder at Art SpeciallyOn Saturday night, there were workshops at the adjacent hotel for the guests that had booked for the entire retreat.

Birgit taught her Gelli Plate printing techniques in an hour-long workshop:

And I tried really hard to teach how to make fun backgrounds with Letraset ProMarkers and NeonMarkers:

The hours flew by! In fact: the entire weekend went by way too fast! It’s so weird that something you’ve been looking forward to for many months is suddenly over!

I saw and spoke to a lot of familiar faces and I’m terribly sorry I still missed so many of the people who I know where there too!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi and/or took the time to take the make ‘n take or the workshop: you’ve made my weekend!

Special thanks to the wonderful people at Scrapbookzolder for having me!

And finally: thank you Birgit for your lovely companionship! It was fun!!!

From the weekend | Workshop preparations

Marsha Valk | Workshop Scrapbookzolder 25 april 2015

I’ve had the best weekend, filled with ink and paint and crayons, prepping for the workshop at Scrapbookzolder!

I had three canvases going at the same time, so I didn’t have to wait for paint to dry. It was so much fun!

Marsha Valk | Workshop Scrapbookzolder 25 april 2015

I love working with the Balzer Designs face stencils. They’re a great help for when you are thinking about trying more realistic portrait painting.

They can for instance help you figure out where to position eyes, nose etc. and they’re definitely great for practising shadowing!

Marsha Valk | Workshop Scrapbookzolder 25 april 2015

Will you join me April 25th 2015 at Scrapbookzolder? I’ll teach you all my tips and tricks! Go to the Scrapbookzolder website for the details (in Dutch)!

Lost (OLW #86)

140811_MarshaValk_OLW_Lost

There’s a new word up on One Little Word! This time Denise asked us to create with the word LOST in mind.

The story behind my project begins a long time ago. About 6 or 7 years ago I felt stuck at my job and didn’t know what to do about it. Did I want to switch careers? Was there another job I could do within the organisation? I had the chance to do a career path assessment course. It was a group course and the group members were fascinating and a huge inspiration.

At one time I think we had to tell about something we enjoyed doing in our spare time. One guy told the group about how he photographed random things that people had LOST on the go. You know: that shoe lying in the gutter, a shawl hanging in the bushes. Or maybe one lonely sock…

I know that when I see something like that just lying in the street I always think: but how do you loose just one shoe? Did someone throw it at someone else? Was it Cinderella being hasty? What the heck happened here?

The man called his project ‘Verloren lijfheden’. At least that’s what I remember… Maybe I’m wrong, because ‘lijfheden’ isn’t actually a word in Dutch. So I wouldn’t know how to translate it for you. Something (but not exactly) like ‘Lost body-parts’. No matter what the exact name of this project was, I thought it was so awesome that I’ve never forgotten about it.

2014-0737

Fast forward a few weeks ago: I was attending an illustration course at Elle Aime. On the second day of the course we worked with paper and one of the assignments was to create a book cover. I already had this months One Little Word on my mind and all of a sudden things clicked… The subject of my book cover had to be ‘something’ LOST and then… it was obvious to me it had to be about ‘Verloren lijfheden’.

Every single thing on the page was hand-cut by me. Even the title… Ha! Who needs a Silhouette?! No, of course I’m keeping my Silhouette, but it’s pretty neat to know I can do without!

Thanks for stopping by today! Go and see what the others created here at the One Little Word blog!
