Elizabeth Craft Designs | Baby Onesie

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Designer Challenge Baby Theme

A new designer challenge is revealed today at the Elizabeth Craft Design Blog. This time it’s about all things baby! Check out all the wonderful baby themed projects here.

I decorated a small baby onesie with fabric paint! I’ve been wanting to use the Tulip Soft Matte fabric paints that were given to me to try out by the lovely people at iLoveToCreate. This was the perfect project for it!

I only had three colours (Chocolate, Linen Matte and Yellow) , so I added black and pink Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint and a green and blue fabric paint that I already had in my stash.

Here are the steps to create something similar:

1. Cut a sheet of cardboard the size of the pre-washed onesie and insert it between the layers of fabric. It helps to keep the fabric flat and it also protects the back of the onesie from the paint.

2. Apply peel-off stickers of choice to the onesie.

3. Apply fabric paint inside the lines of the peel-off. I used a paint brush to dab the paint into the fabric. Apply several coats if needed.

4. Remove the peel-offs.

5. Leave to dry flat.

6. Now follow the instructions on the fabric paint. Some paints need to be heat set before they are permanent. The Tulip Soft Matte paints just need to dry for 4 hours and can be washed (inside out) after 72 hours!

This was my first project using fabric paint the way it’s intended. I’ve had several tubes of Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paints in my stash for years now, but up until now I’ve only used them on art and paper projects.

This was so much fun to do and so much easier than I had expected!

The Tulip Soft Fabric Paint is really easy to use. It goes on like butter and it’s nice and opaque, so you really don’t need to apply more than one or two coats.

I especially love that you don’t have to heat set this paint. This means you can apply it to all kinds of textile surfaces, even shoes and purses!

Have a great day!
